Reviews

ZhZh Arlekin

Oh, what a concert! Unusual, rare. The [Sibelius] suite for Strindberg's drama, Swanwhite 1908)... in Pletnev and the RNO's hands was transformed into a string of pearls.

Bez Falshi

These days, [Shostakovich's] 13th Symphony is rarely performed. This is attributed to the complexity of the score, the diversity of the themes, the difficult composition, the abundance of fine details and nuance, and the fact that a large number of performers is required. In their interpretation of Shostakovich's masterpiece, the RNO conducted by Kirill Karabits proved their elevated status as one of the world's greatest symphonic groups, capable of ascending any peak on the musical Olympus.

The orchestra became not merely a musical accompanist of the poems, but a huge, colorful canvas filled with an imaginary painting, where the composer shares his experiences, the heroes' emotions, sufferings, humor, their points of view, the hidden subtexts of 'Fears' and 'Careers.' The choir became 'the voice of the people,' agreeing with the hero or protesting about events, akin to the choir in Bach's St. Matthew Passion. At the symphony's end, the hall was flooded with applause, and the audience stood for a long time applauding the artists, the music, the great composer and the great poet.

This performance of the 13th Symphony was a noteworthy occasion in our capital's cultural life. The quality and professionalism of the players, the mastery and talent of the performers, allowed the audience to become immersed in the symphony's massive space, in its essence, grounded as it is in its interweaving of music and poetry – the words a gift of the great poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko.

Vedomosti

No matter what Pletnev and his orchestra play, their concerts are the standard of quality, and often there are artistic revelations.

Revizor.ru

Despite a busy schedule of performances in the world's most prestigious concert halls, the musicians of the RNO always find time to put on charity concerts for those who rarely have a chance to enter such halls. They invite military veterans, pensioners, and children from large or impoverished families to their native Orchestrion. And of course they also invite students of the capital's music schools.

Troitsk Inform

In the Glinka Children's Art School on October 26 there was an unusual concert in the series "Russian National Orchestra For Children." The name contained several meanings.

First, the virtuosos of the orchestra... performed for students young and old who are interested in pursuing music or who are making their first steps in this realm. Second, the project offered talented young pianists a chance to perform alongside famous musicians. Twelve-year-old Yegor Oparin performed Prokofiev's First Piano Concerto; Fyodor Orlov (13) played his Second Concerto. The second half of the program was taken up by the brilliant 15-year-old pianist Alexander Doronin. He performed Rachmaninov's Second Concerto.

The concert program is called 'Magic of Music: The Impossible Possible.' And so it was: musicians of the highest caliber performed for free before a Troitsk audience.

What They’re Saying

"I saw the greatest orchestra in the world play Friday night. If you think that's hyperbole, ask anyone who was in Yardley Hall that night. The Russian National Orchestra is the Rolls-Royce of orchestras, no ordinary ensemble."

The Kansas City Star
