Alexander Vedernikov (1964-2020)

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Maestro Alexander Vedernikov, a longtime artistic partner and friend of the RNO, who died of complications from Covid-19 on October 29, 2020.

Maestro Vedernikov led the RNO on many occasions in concerts and recordings, and served as a member of the RNO Conductor Collegium. He will be remembered for his powerful interpretations of the symphonic and operatic canon and of contemporary music, and for his warmth and compassion. He will be deeply missed.

The RNO extends its sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

What They’re Saying

"In a modern classical world, rife with reports of under-funded and dying ensembles, curtailed schedules and shrinking audiences, the foundation and continued growth of [the Russian National Orchestra] seems not only miraculous; it just may be the most important cultural story of our time."
