The First International Pure Sound (Чистый Звук) award ceremony took place in late October. The competition was created by the Russian Music Union (a member of the International Music Council), with awards given for the best Russian classical music recordings.

The competition encompassed over 150 works in eight categories.

The RNO was nominated in two categories and won first prize in the category Concert for Solo Instrument with Orchestra, for its October performance of Yefrem Podgayts' work "Double Mirror." The concerto for bayan, cello and orchestra was conducted by Mikhail Pletnev, with soloists Friedrich Lips (bayan) and Alexander Buzlov (cello), and premiered at the closing concert of the RNO's 10th Annual Grand Festival.

The RNO also received a second-place prize in the category Symphonic Music, for its recording of Dmitry Shostakovich's Symphonies No. 4 and 10, released on the Pentatone label in 2018.

What They’re Saying

"I saw the greatest orchestra in the world play Friday night. If you think that's hyperbole, ask anyone who was in Yardley Hall that night. The Russian National Orchestra is the Rolls-Royce of orchestras, no ordinary ensemble."
